Endodontic treatment is necessary when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the root canal) becomes inflamed or infected because of deep decay or a chipped tooth.
If left untreated, inflammation or infection can cause pain or further damage to teeth and gums.
During root canal treatments, the blood supply and tooth nerve structures are removed. Then the roots are usually filled with a specific material and sealed. Frequently there is few reminiscent dental structure and as so dental crowns are often placed over non-vital teeth.
