Do you know what is causing your toothache?
Pain should never be ignored. Although toothache is often associated with dental decay, it may be a symptom of a range of underlying dental and oral conditions.
Dental Pain is usually related to:
- Dental cavities
- Infections and abscesses
- Inflammation of the dental nerve
- Gum disease and periodontal problems
- Dental fractures
- Wisdom teeth complications
- Tooth sensitivity
- Bruxism
At Clínica São Dente, we carry out a thorough diagnosis to identify the cause of your pain and provide the most effective treatment, restoring your comfort and peace of mind.
Dental pain is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Understanding its cause is the first step towards eliminating pain.
Have you broken a tooth and don't know what to do?
What causes a tooth fracture?
A tooth can fracture for a variety of reasons, including tooth decay, trauma, or prolonged clenching and grinding of the teeth (bruxism).
Teeth that have been weakened by previous dental treatment, such as large fillings or extensive restorations, are also more susceptible to fracture.
How can I relieve pain after a fractured tooth?
Not all tooth fractures are associated with pain. However, when pain is present, it may be managed with painkillers and/or anti-inflammatory medication following an assessment by a dentist.
You can also take preventive measures, such as avoiding chewing on the side of the fractured tooth. It is important to note that none of these measures resolves the underlying problem, and an appointment with a dentist should be scheduled as soon as possible.
What types of tooth fractures can occur?
Fractured baby teeth
Tooth fractures in children are usually the result of an accident or injury. It is important for your child to be examined by a dentist as soon as possible to assess not only the affected baby tooth but also any potential damage to the developing permanent tooth.
Fractured front teeth
Because the front teeth play a key role in your smile, fractures affecting these teeth should be assessed promptly, even if they appear minor or are not causing pain.
Fractured back teeth
Fractures affecting the back teeth may not always be painful. However, they can leave sharp or rough edges that irritate or injure the tongue and cheeks, making eating and speaking uncomfortable.
If the fracture extends into the pulp (the inner part of the tooth containing the nerve and blood vessels), it can cause severe, persistent toothache and may require urgent dental treatment.
What treatment is recommended for a fractured tooth?
Treatment for a fractured tooth depends on the severity and location of the damage. In some cases, a simple filling or dental bonding may be enough to restore the tooth. More extensive fractures may require a dental crown or root canal treatment, while severely damaged teeth that cannot be saved may need to be extracted.
How can tooth fractures be prevented?
Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to detect tooth decay early and treat it before it weakens the tooth and leads to a fracture.
Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment are often more fragile, particularly if they have been extensively damaged by decay. In many cases, protecting these teeth with a full or partial ceramic crown can significantly reduce the risk of fracture.
If you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism), early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help protect your teeth from excessive wear and reduce the likelihood of future fractures.

I arrived in Lisbon from the US with a terrible toothache and had resigned myself to just gritting my teeth (literally) through our 10-day trip and dealing with it back home. On a whim, I Googled 'dentist near me' and came across Clinica Sao Dente. I messaged them on WhatsApp Friday evening, fully expecting to wait days for a reply, and instead heard back almost immediately with an appointment for 1pm the next day, a Saturday. The clinic itself is modern and welcoming, and the care was thorough: a full 360 x-ray, a follow-up x-ray, and a careful exam from Dr. Catarina Robim, who along with the rest of the staff was warm, patient, and clearly excellent at what she does. It was honestly the best dental visit I've ever had, anywhere, and the whole thing cost 65 euros. If you're traveling and need emergency dental care in Lisbon, do yourself a favor and go here.Publicado em Google Bruno HortelãoTrustindex verifica se a fonte original da avaliação é Google. I’m incredibly grateful to Dr. Sancho Silvestre and Andreia Dias for removing my wisdom tooth. I had an urgent and very complicated surgery that lasted 3 hours — the roots of the tooth were extremely close to the trigeminal nerve. Dr. Sancho Silvestre carefully removed the tooth piece by piece to minimize any impact on the nerve. Everything went perfectly, and the nerve was left completely untouched. Truly amazing, delicate work! My highest recommendations and endless gratitude!Publicado em Google Malte SchüttTrustindex verifica se a fonte original da avaliação é Google.
