Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study, assessment and treatment of the tooth’s supporting tissues, namely the gums, bone and periodontal ligament.
What causes Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease results from inflammation of the gums caused by accumulated plaque and tartar.
Gum inflammation is related to a change in the normal colour of the gums from pink to red and bleeding, which can occur during brushing or even spontaneously.
Chronic inflammation of the gums leads to bone loss, leading to tooth mobility, and subsequently, to tooth loss.
